Quilt Block: Harvest Star Owners: John and Carol Boitano History: John and Carol Boitano (Boitano Construction) built this barn in 1988 to replicate the old barns in the Kittitas Valley. It has been used for hay storage and livestock. The Naches- Selah stage coach stop was located on the other side of the creek in the S.E. corner of the farm. Carol chose and helped paint the ‘Harvest Star’ quilt block. * A turn around for large vehicles is just up the road and to the right.

Quilt Block: Eight Pointed Star variation Owners: Kim and Bob Roseburg John and Britta Roseburg settled in the Peoh Point area in 1888. The farm has remained in the Roseburg family ever since. Robert Roseburg purchased the farm from his mother, Ida. Then Hartvig JR. Roseburg was the next generation to farm the land. Bob Roseburg, the son of Robert, is the 4th generation to farm the family homestead. The massive old barn, built in the early 1900′s, still stands true and square. Built to stable draft horses and for hay storage, it was once converted into a dairy in the 40′s. Currently the barn is used for farm equipment and hay storage.

Quilt Blocks: East end- ‘Star and Windmill’ West end- ‘Basket’ (to reference the Kittitas tribe basket weavers) (Both quilt blocks were taken from the original quilts made by the Olmstead women.) Owners: Washington State Parks and Recreation (Discover Pass required) Farm History: Samuel Olmstead married Sarah Yale in 1861 and farmed the Minnesota frontier. Urged by Samuel’s half brother, J.D. Olmstead, they came to Kittitas Valley in 1875. They built the original cabin on this property in 1876 out of cottonwood trees from near the Yakima River. The orchards and fruiting shrubs were planted in 1877. (Many of the old trees stand today) In 1881, Samuel died suddenly and left the burden of the farm to Sarah and her two sons, Phil and Jack. In 1892 the young Olmstead men built the the dairy barn on the west end of the meadow. In 1908, the Olmsteads built the farmhouse and big red barn to store grain and hay. In 1968, Olmstead descendants deeded Olmstead Place for use as a historical park

Quilt Block: Scottish Star Owner: Sherry Mc Donald Family History: Sherry’s maternal grandparents homesteaded in the Badger Pocket area.(Morrison Road is named after them.) Her paternal grandparents farmed on what is now Sorenson Road for over 50 years until her uncle took over the farm. Sherry has lived on the family property for close to 60 years. Her barn quilt (facing Denmark Road) reflects her Scottish heritage.

Quilt Block: Crazy Quilt with Angus Bull Owner: Laura Masterson The Masterson Ranch was settled in 1880 by James Masterson and his sons, Harry and Howard (Bat). James Masterson was not only a pioneer cattleman, but a former US Marshall, buffalo hunter, silversmith,Army Scout and 49′er. James and his son’s dug a three mile long irrigation canal to the 2,000 acres from the Teanaway river. The massive barn was originally built for horses and hay storage, once held 48 teams of draft horses. Thousands of head of Angus cattle grazed the pastures of the original holdings. In 1959, metal siding and roofing was added to the exterior to help preserve the barn’s wood exterior and eliminate the need to shovel snow. The ranch remains in the Masterson family today. Laura, Kathy and Marcus Masterson, proudly share the history and legacy of the their family ranch. They chose the ‘Crazy Quilt’ block based on a family quilt made by Mary Masterson and the Angus bull represents the fine breeding of superior Angus cattle

Quilt Block: ’Wagon Wheel’ with ‘Circle 7′ family brand. Owners: Chuck and Bev Ballard The barn was built in 1900 for hay storage and horses and currently is utilized for farm storage. The barn’s diagonal bracing is very unusual in the valley, but has served the farm well. It has been able to withstand the considerable winds over the last century. The Ballard farm has been in the Ballard Family for six remarkable generations! The quilt block is dedicated to the memory of family-member,Greg Ballard, a well-loved firefighter in our county. The Ballard family’s original land holdings are still intact, a rarity in agriculture today. The land on the hill above the farm was donated for the one-room, Teanaway school in 1904. The school was deeded to the Swauk Teanaway Grange in 1947

Quilt Block: School House with Flying Geese Border (painted by the Grange Women’s Auxillary) Owners: Swauk Teanaway Grange #984 History: The original building was built in 1904 as the one room Ballard School for the children of the earliest residents in the Teanaway and Swauk Valley. The property was donated by the Ballard Family (still live on the land below the Grange). For the past 70 years it has been a Grange Hall and the center of activity for the rural community in upper Kittitas County. It is one of the most scenic and photographed locations in the area. In 2004, just weeks before the planned Centennial Celebration of the building, it was destroyed by fire. The members pledged to immediately rebuild this landmark reminding people the agricultural heritage and rural community pride. Thousands of people come through the doors of the Swauk Teanaway Grange to attend square dances, concerts, and community potlucks. It is available to rent for meetings, weddings, reunions and memorial services. 509-857

Flying Horseshoe Ranch is now a youth ranch with horseback riding, lessons, and cabins for large and small groups.

Quilt Block: ’Frances’s Dream’ (Frances chose this quilt block because it reminder her of a dream she once had.) Owners: Frances and David Ceraolo The original farm was a dairy farm and dude ranch. The old barn collapsed under the weight of the heavy snows the winter of 1995-96. The large hooped structure, built in 1998 is a riding arena and hay storage. The farm has many uses over the years and most recently David and Frances have raised Paso Fino Horses here. ’Paso Fino’ means ‘fine-step’. and was the first horse brought over to the new world on Christopher Columbus’s second voyage to the new world. They original was of Spanish origin, derived from Barb, Andulusian and the now extinct Spanish Jennet breeds.

This 1914 mansion with its spacious rooms, tiny alcoves, and third floor ballroom holds the story of Cle Elum’s first successful banker and former mayor of Cle Elum, Frank Carpenter, and his family. In 1989, the Carpenter Family donated the home and all of its original furnishings to the Historical Society for the express purpose of creating a museum. He used a Sears design and locally milled lumber to build this landmark home, which was unique to the Cle Elum area both for its size and beautiful architecture. The Carpenter Family was very prominent in the Upper County for several decades. In 1989, their only living descendant, Susie, donated the home and all of its original furnishings to the Historical Society for the express purpose of creating a museum. On display are the Carpenter’s original furnishings, carpets, books, etc. The Museum also serves as an art gallery for the local High Country Artists, who provide docent and caretaking services for the Museum. Over the last 30 years has been used for lambs, white-faced cattle, thoroughbred and Belgion draft horses. Currently used for Storage/ Shop/ and RV Park Clubhouse. (open to guests May thru October)

Quilt Block: Compass Rose with crop borders (designed by Bev and Dennis Schwab) Owners: Dennis and Beverly Schwab Farm History: The original land on both sides was a potato farm owned by Steve Bednar. During the 30′s and 40′s, Mr. Bednar was a coal miner in Roslyn and when his shift was over, he’d work his land clearing trees and planting potatoes during the growing months. Owner Dennis Schwab picked potatoes on this property when he was a kid. The remnants of the potato cellar for this property are on the adjacent piece of property just to the south of the hay barn near the road. The property has changed hands a couple of times since then and has since been producing hay most recently. Dennis and Beverly purchased the farm more than 10 years ago and have been grazing the family horses during the summer months.
