Immaculate Conception Church Roslyn WA

Immaculate Conception Church Roslyn WA by visitwainfo

Immaculate Conception Church – Located on Idaho and "B" Streets on a residential hill overlooking Roslyn, the spire of this Roman Catholic church is a notable landmark in the town. It was built in 1887 and continues to serve the local community with regular masses held every Sunday (administered by St. John the Baptist parish in nearby Cle Elum). The church itself was used for internal and external scenes in the 1979 Twentieth Century Fox film The Runner Stumbles starring Dick Van Dyke and Kathleen Quinlan. The story is set in 1911 at a Roman Catholic parish in a rural town in Michigan, and depicts a young nun (Quinlan) who arrives at the parish to help run the church school. When the parish’s two elderly nuns contract tuberculosis, she is forced to move into the rectory that is home to the parish priest (Van Dyke). The close proximity between the two begins to set off gossip in the town, which turns out to be correct as the priest and the nun confess their love for each other.

Pennsylvania Avenue in Roslyn WA

Pennsylvania Avenue in Roslyn WA by visitwainfo

From 1990 through 1995, the exterior scenes for the hit CBS television series Northern Exposure were filmed on Pennsylvania Avenue in Roslyn and the surrounding area. Although the town of Cicely is widely thought to be patterned after the real town of Talkeetna, Alaska, the main street of Cicely and the filming location was actually that of Roslyn. The moose in the opening title sequence of the television show was named Mort and was provided by Washington State University, where he was part of a captive herd. To film the opening sequence, the crew fenced off Roslyn, set Mort loose, and lured him around with food. The Roslyn Cafe mural depicting a camel and palm trees already existed at the time of the filming to describe the local gathering place as "An Oasis." Many local residents served as extras in the filming of the show, and some were given small parts. Northern Exposure remains a colorful draw for tourism and is a central theme for many local commercial activities.

Teanaway River Valley

Teanaway River Valley by visitwainfo

The Teanaway is a beautiful, quiet, rural valley in central Washington State. The Teanaway River Valley was first inhabited by members of the Yakama, Cayous, and Nez Perce Indian Tribes. It was part of the summering grounds for these tribes, where they came to gather food. Today, Small farms, ranches and homesteads are scattered along the river on the valley floor and surrounded by privately owned commercial forest lands. Just to the north are Wenatchee National Forest and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. A paved, two-lane, dead-end county road winds for about 15 miles up the valley, following the Teanaway River and providing spectacular views of Mount Stuart. Hunters, fishermen, hikers, horsemen, cross country skiers, snowmobilers, mountain bikers, birdwatchers, mushroom hunters and photographers from all over the Northwest have cherished this valley for generations. The valley is considered to be one of the most pristine and ecologically valuable and diverse river drainages of the Cascade Range

A non-commercialized ghost town offering a pioneer experience at its original best. It’s a window in the authentic past of Okanogan County Today the three old townsites of the once boom town days still remain, New Molson, Old Molson and Central Molson.
