South Beach, San Juan Island

South Beach, San Juan Island by VisitWa

Located on the South end of San Juan Island, South Beach offers fantastic hiking, beach combing, and extraordinary views of the Olympic Mountains, Straits of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island. It is also a superb place for a picnic lunch or dinner. If it is cool day plan on bringing matches and paper for a beach fire. There is plenty of driftwood available. The views as the sun sets off to the west over Vancouver Island are incomparable! Oh yeah, did I mention that you can sometimes see Orca Whales from land? How cool is that?

Washington State Legislature - free tours by VisitWa

All lamps, and Roman firepots in the rotunda, were made by Tiffany’s. General public tours Guided public tours of the Washington State Legislative Building are offered seven days a week hourly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tours are free and begin every hour on the hour and last 60 minutes. Public tours begin at the Tour Information Desk which is located on the 2nd floor of the Capitol Building, just inside the main entrance doors.

Olympia - the State Capital

Olympia - the State Capital by VisitWa

(360) 704-7544 Olympia is the center of the state - the political center. The State Capital campus (tours daily) is a fine stop to connect with the history of this great state. The Olympia Visitor and Convention Bureau office at the edge of the campus can guide you there, but don’t move on until you see what the city of Olympia itself has to offer. An excellent pedestrian-friendly waterfront, a classic downtown with comfortable character, parks, walks, views, and a world-class children’s’ museum await you. From Olympia, western Washington’s most popular visitor attractions spread out to all the compass points, but take some time to enjoy the charm at the end of both Puget Sound and the Oregon Trail. Submitted by John Deviny, author of "Exploring Washington's Backroads"

Battle Point Park on Bainbridge Island

Battle Point Park on Bainbridge Island by VisitWa

(206) 949-7105 A popular park for families is Battle Point Park. It welcomes kids of all ages. Its expansive 90 acres offers literally miles of paved paths, a couple of ponds, a large kid’s playground, athletic fields and sports courts as well as an equestrian area and a community garden with 28 individual garden plots. Located about five and a half miles northwest of Winslow, on the western edge of the island not far from Manzanita Bay, Battle Point Park is named for a 19th century battle between native tribes. When you arrive at the park, you’ll find two entrances. Either entrance has large parking areas with easy access to the trails. The main, and East entrance on Arrow Point Drive NE is closest to the kid’s play areas. The playground offers a delightful grouping of play structures that include a large sandbox, activity installations like swings and a wooden lighthouse. The runners and joggers tend to favor the other entrance on Battle Point Drive. This entrance is closer to the soccer, softball

Snoqualmie Community Park

Snoqualmie Community Park by VisitWa

The park on Ridge Street is large enough for regional festivals and major sports events, but still can accommodate the family for a cozy picnic or day out in the park. As Snoqualmie’s largest outdoor recreation facility, this 33-acre community park contains two soccer fields, three tennis courts, a basketball court, play equipment, restrooms, parking and access to the Laurel Bog interpretive loop trail. The park is surrounded by open space, giving it a nice, away-from-the-city feel but is just steps away from the Snoqualmie Ridge neighborhood center retail area. The park is a favorite of sports teams and community event organizers. http://www.ci.snoqualmie.wa.us/Departments/ParksRecreationDepartment/SnoqualmieParks/SnoqualmieCommunityPark.aspx
