Officers Row

Officers Row by VisitWa

Where else in the Northwest can you stroll past 22 preserved Victorian homes on the National Historic Register? Built in the mid-to-late 1800s, these beautifully restored homes were intended to house U.S. Army officers stationed at the Vancouver Barracks. The Grant House, built in 1850, now houses The Grant House Restaurant. The Marshall House, built in 1886, offers tours and an exhibit on General George C. Marshall, its most famous resident. http://www.fortvan.org/index.php/Attractions/officers-row.html

Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center

Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center by VisitWa

360.274.5200 “Overwhelming” is the word most used for the view from the deck at Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center. The view of Mt. St. Helens from Hoffstadt Bluffs gets you an up-close view of the mountain and the flood plain where the blast driven mud rushed down into the valley, raising the ground level nearly a mile higher than it was prior to May 18, 1980. Hoffstadt Bluffs is your first panoramic view opportunity of Mount St. Helens on Highway 504. The building is one of the largest post-and-beam structures on the West Coast. And it houses the “Memories of a Lost Landscape” exhibit depicting the mountain prior to the blast. Outside, a paved walking path will take you through a memorial grove, planted in 2000 in memory of all 57 people who perished in the May 18, 1980 eruption. Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center is the second closest to the I-5 corridor. Open 9:30 – 4 every day of the week. Link to video of the helicopter tour. Video is less than 2 minutes. http://www.veoh.com/watch/v18715770KCjE6

Interbay P-Patch

Interbay P-Patch by VisitWa

“One Hundred Gardeners Strong”, the Interbay p-patch is a beautiful garden 30 years in the making. Interbay is part of a network of community gardens throughout Seattle, bound together to steward the land and create spaces for the community to gather. Something to check out would be the “giving garden” which is host to a plot of plants used for food banks and hot meal programs. The very first farm, Picardo Farm (hence the name “P”-Patch), was created in the early 70’s and since has grown to almost 80 patches located all over the Seattle area. Whether you are renting a plot of soil, or just stopping by for a visit, all are welcome to check out one of the oldest p-patch in Seattle. Visit http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/ppatch/locations.htm to find out where all the patches are located. Suggested by evergreenescapes.com

Kerry Park - Best Photo Opp

Kerry Park - Best Photo Opp by VisitWa

The view is postcard worthy. Kerry Park offers one of the best cityscape views in the world. It is a great view anytime, but a sunny day reveals downtown Seattle with Mt. Rainier in the background while the iconic Space Needle looms in the foreground. Grab your camera and capture one of your greatest pictures ever. And the view is just as captivating at sunset as the light reflects off the water and buildings, and at night with the city lights. And it’s a great setting for a souvenir photo of you with the Seattle Skyline in the background. If you enjoyed the TV comedy, Frasier, then you’ll recognize this view as the familiar outlook from the apartment of its star -- Dr. Frasier Crane. Suggested by EverGreen Escapes

Colfax Visitors Information Center

Colfax Visitors Information Center by VisitWa

509-397-4458 The City of Colfax, county seat for Whitman County, is named for Schuyler Colfax, vice president of Ulysses S. Grant. The city’s location is the natural result of the intersection of two rivers and three systems of rails. The first significant industry was logging and lumber milling, but ranching and wheat farming soon followed and a flour mill was added. Today you can stroll through our historic downtown for business or pleasure you will find Colfax a warm and welcoming destination. Colfax, in fact, retains a distinctly western character. Its citizens are friendly and have a generally outdoorsy orientation. In season, hunting is popular (deer, pheasant, chukars, partridge) and fishing is a local passion. Besides many lakes with trout, the Snake river is about 20 miles from town where there is year-around fishing.

East and South Vancouver Barracks

East and South Vancouver Barracks by VisitWa

Vancouver Barracks (1849-1947) is a great example of the kind of military post where anyone would want to be posted. The parade ground stretches along a row of elegantly restored officers quarters that have been re-purposed into everything from a newspaper office to a fine restaurant. Without the re-purposing these grand examples of military quarters architecture would surely have been lost. On the southern side of the parade ground are the less cared for enlisted barracks and service buildings. Some of these buildings are still in use by reserve/guard components and have not undergone the extensive restoration that the officer’s quarters have seen.

Fort Vancouver Heritage Garden

Fort Vancouver Heritage Garden by VisitWa

Historically, the garden at Fort Vancouver covered from five to eight acres and contained “tastefully arranged fine walks, each lined with strawberry vines”, beds of carrots, turnips, cabbage, potatoes, squash, parsnips, cucumbers, peas, tomatoes and beets, a variety of fruits, and flowers including roses and dahlias. The Company shared this abundance, providing seeds and cuttings for local Native Americans interested in agriculture, and later, American settlers to the region. A stroll through today’s garden gives you a glimpse at the fort’s agricultural history. Many of the vegetables and flowers are varieties from the era. You may also see one of the dedicated Garden Volunteers, whose countless hours of labor make this garden possible. The variety of plantings still provides produce, and a place of beauty for visitors to see “such perfection in gardening”.
