“Fountain of Wisdom” by George Tsutakawa

“Fountain of Wisdom” by George Tsutakawa by VisitWa

Commissioned in 1958, “Fountain of Wisdom” was the first fountain by the renowned Seattle artist, the late George Tsutakawa. Following this first fountain, Tsutakawa won considerable international recognition for the 70 of his graceful sculpture fountains in public places around the globe. This tall silicon bronze abstract design is suggestive of obos (stacks of rocks made by trekkers in the Himalays), totem poles, and pagodas. Critics liked this fusion of Asian, Native American, and modern Abstract Expressionist elements which was felt to be deeply evocative of the Pacific Northwest. The fountain is located in the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Plaza near the Fourth Ave. entrance to the Seattle Public Library.

Parque Eduard VII (Eduard VII Park)-Photo Op

Parque Eduard VII (Eduard VII Park)-Photo Op by dshay

Eduard VII Park is the largest park in central Lisbon. It stretches uphill from Marques do Pombal and, at the top, provides excellent views of the city. It is a beautiful park with carefully manicured hedge rows running down the center of the park. The park features two “estufas”, both of which contain many exotic tropical plants. There are a number of cafes in and around the park and the park often hosts many special events so it is good to check the local event schedule. By the way, the park was named after British King Edward VII in 1903 to memorialize the long standing close relationship between Portugal and the United Kingdom.

Igreja do Carmo (Carmo Church) (Photo Op)

Igreja do Carmo (Carmo Church) (Photo Op) by dshay

Just uphill from the Baixa toward Chiado lies Igreja do Carmo. This church was originally constructed as a convent for the Carmelite order in 1389. It was almost completely destroyed in the earthquake of 1755. Approximately 100 years later it was partially reconstructed and turned into a military base. The building is quite significant in modern Portuguese history because it was the last holdout of Manuel Caetano before he was overthrown during the Carnation Revolution of 1974. Today it is used by the Republican Guard. There is a small archeological museum on the site.

Chiado District (Photo Op)

Chiado District (Photo Op) by dshay

Just to the west and slightly uphill from the Baixa lies the Chiado district. This is an area of elegant shops, art galleries and fine restaurants. Like so many areas of Lisbon, it can only been seen, realistically, on foot. Chiado is home to two of the most beautiful coffee houses in all of Lisbon, Cafe Nicola on Rossio Square and Brasileira on Rua Garrett. Be sure and take in the view from the roof top bar of the Hotel Chiado. It offers one of the best views of the city available.

Bairro Alto (Photo Op)

Bairro Alto (Photo Op) by dshay

Bairro Alto is the center of Lisbon night life - Located just to the west of Chiado and the Baixa. With dozens of restaurants and bars located through a web of narrow alleys, Bairo Alto comes alive at night. Traditionally a very working class neighborhood, you’ll find restaurants and bars that appeal to every end of the economic spectrum. The area starts at roughly the Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara and runs south and west toward the river. If you are in this area be sure and check out the shelves full of memorabilia in Pavilhao Chines bar located very near the Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara (see separate entry).

Baixa (Photo Op)

Baixa (Photo Op) by dshay

The Baixa district of Lisbon is the city’s downtown commercial, shopping and art hub. No visit would be complete without a stroll through the Baixa. The best way to see the Baixa is by simply walking its many streets and alleys. Starting at Rossio Square, the central street is Rua Augusta, which runs through the heart of town to Praca do Comercio and the Tagus River. Rua Augusta is certainly worth a stroll, but the most interesting parts of the Baixa are to be found on its side streets. One thing to check out that you probably won’t find in any travel guide is Casa do Alentejano in the Restauradores section of the Baixa. It is has one of the finest collection of azulejos (blue wall tile murals).
