“Fountain of Wisdom” by George Tsutakawa
art,sculpture,fountain
Commissioned in 1958, “Fountain of Wisdom” was the first fountain by the renowned Seattle artist, the late George Tsutakawa. Following this first fountain, Tsutakawa won considerable international recognition for the 70 of his graceful sculpture fountains in public places around the globe.
This tall silicon bronze abstract design is suggestive of obos (stacks of rocks made by trekkers in the Himalays), totem poles, and pagodas. Critics liked this fusion of Asian, Native American, and modern Abstract Expressionist elements which was felt to be deeply evocative of the Pacific Northwest.
The fountain is located in the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Plaza near the Fourth Ave. entrance to the Seattle Public Library.
