Jardim Botto Machado (Photo Op)

Jardim Botto Machado (Photo Op) by dshay

This is a very cozy little park in the heart of Lisbon. It is a great place to relax and do some people watching. There are often locals in the park playing cards or chess and on weekends there is often a flea market.

Shade Brewery - part of the Heritage Walk

Shade Brewery - part of the Heritage Walk by VisitWa

The Schade Brewery, as it stands today, was constructed in four phases: ca. 1902, 1903, 1907 and 1934-37. The building takes its name from Bernhardt Schade, the brewmaster, who had the building erected in 1903 on an oversized city block purchased from a Mr. Frost. Schade hired the architect Lewis Stritesky, to design a facility based on drawings of a European brewery. Stritesky created a new western addition for the building begun by Frost. A bottling building and steam/pump house were also built. Initial production was 35,000 to 40,000 barrels a year. In 1933 Golden Age Breweries Inc., bought the Schade Brewery. It was restored and upgraded to produce up to 200,000 barrels per year. In 1948 the operations were sold to Bohemian Brewing company, who later sold it to Atlantic Brewing company. Now the building is mixed use. Posted by Nadine S., Spokane's Homegrown Tourist

The Flour Mill- part of the Heritage Walk

The Flour Mill- part of the Heritage Walk by VisitWa

The Spokane Flour Mill, built in 1895, was one in a series of mills built along the Spokane Falls prior to 1900. Those mills helped establish Spokane as a city. The flour mill was built after the Great Fire in 1889 on the north side of the river. The mill building is 4-7 stories high – 4 stories on the front side, and 7 stories on the river side – with a corbel gambrel roof. Since there was no electricity, a water wheel in the river was used to power the operations. Although completed in 1895, the Flour Mill did not come into operation until 1900 because the property became entangled in a complex international lawsuit. It operated for 72 years and was renovated as a shopping mall and offices in time for the World’s Fair in 1974, at a cost of $2 million dollars. http://www.discovery-school.org/flourmill.html posted by Nadine S., Spokane’s Homegrown Tourist

The Symons Building - part of the Heritage Walk

The Symons Building - part of the Heritage Walk by VisitWa

T.W. Symons Jr., a World War I veteran and pioneer in aviation, built the red brick and terra cotta Symons Block in 1917. It took 12 railroad cars to bring the steel for the construction of this building to Spokane from Minneapolis. The highly-regarded architectural team of Archibald Rigg and Roland Van Tyne, known for several Spokane landmarks, designed the Symons Block. It was built in 1917-1918, with great attention paid to style and investment in quality materials and construction. Spokane business investor Colonel Thomas W. Symons and his son helped bring broadcast radio to the Northwest. For many years the Symons Building was home to Spokane’s first radio station. Today it is used for retail and office space. Old Spokane City Hall - a stop on the Heritage Walk

Old Spokane City Hall - a stop on the Heritage Walk by VisitWa

This building was erected to serve as the temporary home of City Hall in 1912-1913, when railroad construction required demolition of the previous City Hall building. Its interior was designed to be turned into a warehouse when vacated. It remains much the same as built, a well-preserved legacy of the Commercial Style and Chicago School of architecture, as interpreted by noted local architect Julius Zittel. This “temporary” building served as City Hall until 1982, when the city offices were moved into the Montgomery Ward Building at Post Street and Spokane Falls Boulevard. It has been renovated for office and commercial space. The Olive Garden restaurant is on the ground floor. http://spokanehistorical.org/items/show/187#.VG5QasJ0y1s posted by Nadine S., Spokane’s Homegrown Tourist

Cliff Park - PhotoOp

Cliff Park - PhotoOp by VisitWa

Standing at 2260 feet above sea level, this volcanic outcrop was used by the Spokane Tribe as a lookout. The park was formed in 1908 and includes only 4.2 acres. Climb up the steps of the big basalt rock to the open grassy area at the top. On a clear day you can see as far as the Little Spokane River and Mount Spokane. From up there, the sky seems huge and the sunsets are beautiful. Great spot for a picnic in a lovely part of town surrounded by quaint, turn-of-the-century houses. The rock is also used as a rated climbing rock, complete with a mix of bolted routes and TR anchors. Small parking lot. Open from dawn to dusk. Spokane Parks and Recreation (509) 625-6200

Spokane Heritage Walk

Spokane Heritage Walk by VisitWa

Take a self-guided tour of Spokane’s historic places on the downtown Spokane Heritage Walk. You can customize your tour, so the time to take the walk will vary. There are three tours of downtown – East, West and Central. You will find a map of each on the website. http://www.historicspokane.org/HeritageTours/ Discover the unique history, charm and diversity of downtown Spokane. Much of Spokane's historic buildings have been preserved and are currently still in use. In fact, over 50% of Spokane's downtown buildings are historic. After the 1889 fire, in which much of downtown Spokane was destroyed, a number of architects relocated here and made names for themselves by designing enduring buildings of the then current, and now remarkable, styles of the day. Walk brochure is available at the Spokane Convention and Visitors Bureau, 201 W. Main.

Cemiterio dos Prazeres (Cemetery of ‘Pleasures’) – (Photo Op)

Cemiterio dos Prazeres (Cemetery of ‘Pleasures’) – (Photo Op) by dshay

The oddly named Cemetery of Pleasures is the largest cemetery in Lisbon. Many notables from Portuguese history are buried here. Many wealthy families have constructed massive mausoleums that are elaborately decorated. The Cemetery is really a city within a city with well-defined streets and lanes. It might seem odd to recommend visiting a cemetery but the richness and beauty and sheer size of some of the mausoleums make it a worthwhile visit. The cemetery is in the Prazeres neighborhood at the end of the Tram 28 line.

Vasco da Gama Statue - (Photo Op)

Vasco da Gama Statue - (Photo Op) by dshay

Vasco da Gama, one of Portugal’s most famous explorers, is memorialized in a beautiful statue located in the center of the appropriately named Vasco da Gama gardens. The gardens and statue are located in Belem in front of Monasterio Jeronimos next to Jardim da Praca do Imperio (see separate entry). Vasco da Gama led an expedition that left Lisbon in 1497 and established the first trade route to India around the Cape of Good Hope. It is largely because of this trade route that allowed Portugal to become one of the dominant trading nations for several hundred years.

Green Corridor

Green Corridor by dshay

Lisbon is very hilly making it tiring to navigate on foot or on a bicycle. Recently the City of Lisbon completed a walking, running and biking path that runs all the way from Parque Eduard VII to Parque Florestal de Monsanto and then runs throughout the Parque(see separate entries). Walking, running or biking this path is a great way to see the city and Monsanto offers a wonderful respite from the hectic pace of the city. One of the highlights is that the path passes by the aqueduct (see separate entry) and it is often possible to go over the aqueduct (it isn’t always open).
