Turismo Cascais (Cascais Tourism Office)

Turismo Cascais (Cascais Tourism Office) by dshay

Virtually every town of any appreciable size in Portugal has a tourism office. These offices are staffed by knowledgeable locals who can assist you in locating attractions and activities in the local area. Turismo offices are typically open from about 0900-1900 but are often closed for lunch from 1300-1430. The office in Cascais is located in a temporary kiosk located in largo Cidade de Vitoria across the street from the Hotel Baia. Note: this location is temporary and will close for the winter on 30-Sept-2016. It is uncertain when the new location will open.

Martim Moniz (Photo Op)

Martim Moniz (Photo Op) by dshay

Just a short walk from the heart of Lisbon, the fascinating Martim Moniz area is often overlooked by tourists. Martim Moniz is named after a nobleman that lived during the 12th century. The central square in Martim Moniz is the focal point for the multi-cultural side of Lisbon. In this area you’ll hear many languages spoken and you’ll see grocery stores and restaurants featuring food from all over the world. You will often see a DJ playing music in the square and at night there is always a party.

Quinta do Pisao (Photo Op)

Quinta do Pisao (Photo Op) by dshay

Quinta do Pisao is a designated natural space located within the Municipality (Camera Municipal) of Cascais. It is situated at the foot of the Serra da Sintra Mountains. It is a great area for walking and each year it is host to LandArt, featuring works of art that are too large to be housed in a museum. Quinta do Pisao is located between Sintra and Malvera da Serra and, as a practical matter, it is only accessible if you have a rental car or via a taxi.

The Crescent Building

The Crescent Building by VisitWa

L.L. Rand designed this steel-reinforced concrete addition with its cream terra cotta cladding for the ever-expanding Crescent department store in 1917-18. The Crescent opened its doors the morning after the 1889 fire in a crescent-shaped building on West Riverside Avenue, next to the Review Building. Over the years, business grew and the store moved locations until the store on Riverside was built in 1898. In 1993 it was renovated as the Crescent Court, a complex of office and retail space. It is connected to the downtown shopping area connected by skywalks. Posted by Nadine S., Spokane's Homegrown Tourist

Spokane City Hall/Montgomery Wards Bldg

Spokane City Hall/Montgomery Wards Bldg by VisitWa

Montgomery Wards, originator of the mail order business, opened in this building in 1929. It is designed by J.C. Douche and E.J. Kratt, architects from their Chicago offices. It is one of several art deco style buildings in Spokane. (The term “art deco” came from the name of a 1925 art expo in Paris which popularized the futuristic, modern style that borrowed from Egyptian and Aztec visual arts.) When the store opened it is rumored that 55,000 people shuffled through the seven stories, which were packed with clothing, housewares, furniture and sporting goods, in the first two days. The building even had its own railroad spur from the Union Pacific elevated line nearby. The building was purchased and refurbished by the city of Spokane and became the new Spokane city hall in 1982. Posted by Nadine S., Spokane’s Homegrown Tourist

'Fifty Shades of Grey' Tower - Photo Op

'Fifty Shades of Grey' Tower - Photo Op by YodioMan

Escala tower is the centerpiece of E.L. James' 2012 novel, "Fifty Shades of Grey." Featured throughout this fictional novel, the “1920 – Fourth Ave.” address of the elegant, 30-story ESCALA is among Seattle’s most exclusive addresses, and the building is shown in a number of location shots in the movie of the same name. For fans, it is a major photo op. Since Escala is a private residence, most fans are limited to having their picture taken in front of the street sign and shots capturing the building exterior. Several scenes in "Fifty Shades of Grey" were filmed at the top of the big circular stairway. The grand staircase ascends from the lobby to Club Cielo, an exclusive 25,000-square-foot city club for homeowners and their guests.

Villa Bertha (Photo Op) by dshay

This villa is one of Lisbon’s “secret” treasures. It is a beautiful building that is over 100 years old. It is notable for its quality of construction and finishes including wrought-iron balconies (not common at the time), tile friezes and Art Nouveau decorative touches. Francisco Tojal was the designer and builder. He gave the villa the name Berta, after his only female child. The building is located in the Graca district, an area that is home to a number of other notable Lisbon sites.

Pavilhao Chinez (Chinese Pavillion)

Pavilhao Chinez (Chinese Pavillion) by dshay

Pavilhao Chinez is one of the most unique bars to be found anywhere. The bar has five rooms and each room contains thousands of collectables or every sort. There are over 4 million collectable items on display. It is really more of a museum than a bar, although with an 80 page drink menu it certainly qualifies as a full-fledged bar as well. It is worth a stop even if you aren’t interested in having a drink just because of the memorabilia on display. Although a bar it is a great place to visit for the whole family. It is located in Principe Real very near downtown Lisbon. The bar opens every day at 6 PM (1800).
