English Camp National Historical Park

English Camp National Historical Park by VisitWa

(360)378-2240, ext. 2233 In 1859, the Pig War crisis was defused by Great Britain and the United States agreeing to a joint occupation of San Juan Island until the water boundary between the two nations could be settled. It was decided that camps for each country would be located on opposite ends of the island. The original formal garden at English Camp was planted in 1867 by the second commandant, Capt. William Addis Delacombe. His goal was to create a wee bit of England for his wife and family who accompanied him to the Pacific Northwest. A replica garden was installed on the site in 1972 to commemorate the peaceful resolution of the boundary dispute. www.visitsanjuans.com

American Camp National Historical Park

American Camp National Historical Park by VisitWa

(360)378-2240, ext. 2233 Camp San Juan Island, today known as American Camp, was occupied by the U.S. Army from July 1859 through November 1874. It was here that the U.S. and Great Britain nearly went to war over a pig shot by an American farmer. Pressures had been building between the two nations over possession of the San Juan Island group since 1846 when the Treaty of Oregon left ownership unclear. Thus came the Pig War crisis, at the height of which more than 500 U.S. Army soldiers and three British warships were nose to nose on the southern shore. Fortunately, officials on both sides quickly restored calm and the nations agreed to a joint military occupation of the island until the boundary could be decided. Today, the park is an excellent place to hike, picnic, play on the beach, experience wildlife and enjoy a wealth of programming, including the summer living history events. www.visitsanjuans.com

Old Robe Trail

Old Robe Trail by VisitWa

Near the top of Sand Hill is a large stone marker on the south side of the highway. This marks the start of a short, but incredibly historical, hike downhill to the old railbed and original townsite of Robe, Washington. The trail joins the railbed where the large Johnson-Deane Mill once stood. The town of Robe was adjacent to the mill on the upstream side, where logging trains brought logs to the mill on the mainline. But Robe Canyon was a massive challenge for the railroad, with its scenic but unforgiving sides, initially requiring six tunnels, through which flood waters often ran. Cave-ins and landslides were commonplace. Take care as you hike this beautiful trail, but take notice of the concrete that was used in attempts to protect the rails from the ravages of the river. http://myoncell.mobi/sounds/13603553170/media/13603553170_mmss_stop5.mp4
