Later in life he began to focus his work on the Pacific Northwest landscapes. 509-935-8595 The name of the town comes from a Kalispel word,for "watersnake" or "gartersnake". Chewelah was home to a band of the Kalispel people. In 1873 Thomas and Mary Brown founded the town of Chewelah and incorporated in 1903. In 1883 silver and lead deposits were discovered. Chewelah’s mines kept producing well into the 1950s. Today in the town, the turn of the century brick buildings house an array of modern day shops and businesses. The area is loaded with organized sports for the young and old alike. 509-234-8731 The community was established in 1883 as a railroad stop called Palouse Junction. The community later became known as Connell, named after Northern Pacific Station Agent, Joseph Connell. Connell was incorporated in 1910. The community is very proud of the number of parks facilities it has and the care that is lavished upon them. The City also has a pool which was recently remodeled. City athletic fields range from general purpose open space, to soccer and baseball fields. There is a broad choice of housing styles and prices for residents with a new housing development underway. The City has recently purchased additional water rights and has abundant water for future growth in residential, commercial and industrial activities.

Highlights of the presentation include the historic Moran Photograph Collection, Phantom of the Opera music performed on the Mansion’s 1,972 pipe Aeolian organ with the silent film, stories of the Mansion’s most colorful residents, and Christopher’s original piano compositions played on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano. Presented on Saturdays only at 4:00 p.m. September through mid June in the Music Room of the Moran Mansion. (360) 376-2326 Moran State Park on Orcas Island is a 5,252-acre camping park with five freshwater lakes and over 30 miles of hiking trails. Atop the 2,409-foot-high Mt. Constitution, the highest point on the San Juan Islands, there stands a stone observation tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. The tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding islands, the Cascade Mountains and a variety of Canadian and American cities. The park is open year-round for camping and day use. Some campsites are closed in winter. Reservations necessary Memorial Day through Labor Day. Although access to the park is free, there is a cost of $10/day to park.
