Barn Quilt Trail - Sunny Heights Farm

Barn Quilt Trail - Sunny Heights Farm by quiltbarnwa

Quilt Block: Courthouse Steps Owners: Paul and Doris Schwarz History: The barn was built in 1995 for hay storage. Although the barn is newer, the quilt block represents a very old quilt. Doris’s Grandmother brought this beautiful, colorful, quilt from Independance, Missouri, over the Barlow Trail in 1860. Her last name was Bonney and she and her husband were very close friends with the ill-fated Whitman family of the Whitman Mission in Walla Walla. Doris’s grandparents went on to homestead in the fertile Willamette Valley and before their deaths, they willed a considerable amount of land to establish a Boy’s Home and school on the banks of the Willamette River.

Roslyn Cemetery

Roslyn Cemetery by museumsWA

Open: Dawn to Dusk 509-649-2355 Roslyn’s 19-acre cemetery complex encompasses 26 separate, historic cemeteries formed in the late 1800s by local ethnic and civic lodges to provide for the burial of their members. Stories of the people buried on the grounds are told through gravestones, ethnic icons and artwork, epithets, carvings – even some photographs. Burial practices recorded here provide a glimpse into individual lives as well as ethnic cultures reaching back to ‘old world’ countries. Locals say, “Every grave has a story to tell.” For example, the gravesites of 45 miners killed in a mine explosion in 1892, the largest mining disaster in state history. Many people travel here from other states and countries to unearth ancestral and cultural stories.
