High Steel Bridge

High Steel Bridge by VisitWa

The highest railway arch bridge ever built in the United States, the High Steel arch bridge soars 365 feet (111 mtrs) above the South Fork of the Skokomish River. The falls dry out by mid summer, so the best time to visit is November to February when the Skokomish River basin receives heavy rainfall. Directions: exit Highway 101 at the signed road to the Skokomish Trailhead (Skokomish Valley Road). Drive this road for about 6 miles to where the pavement splits. Follow the right fork (non-dead end) up the hill for another 3 miles, losing the pavement for gravel about 1 mile along, then turn right along Road 2340, signed "High Steel Bridge, 3". Drive this route for 3 miles to the bridge. Park on either side. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, with ID 82004265, and was added to the NRHP on July 16, 1982. 70 second video of bridge outlook http://vimeo.com/44018480

Ritzville Carnegie Public Library

Ritzville Carnegie Public Library by VisitWa

The Ritzville Public Library had its original cornerstone laid on June 4, 1907, with much fanfare, including Governor Albert Mead’s presence. The historic structure was built by contractor, Shontz S. Schuler, after the city received $10,500 from the Carnegie Foundation Fund. The new building housed the small free book collection that Daniel Buchanan had donated to the city on May 10, 1902. The building has always been a library, one of only four in Washington State that can claim that distinction. The library has always been a feature of the downtown renaissance architecture. During the early years, the basement served as the City Council Chambers and hosted other town meetings, including those of the Temperance Union. The library can be contacted at 509-659-1222, ritzlib@ritzcom.net or www.ritzvillelibrary.org.

Alki Beach Park

Alki Beach Park by VisitWa

Ok, Seattle isn't California, but on a beautiful day at Alki Beach Park you won't even notice! Yes, Seattle has beaches and Alki in West Seattle is a great spot to spend a day, the first settlers to Seattle certainly thought so as this is where they landed! There's a 2.5 mile wide path to accommodate strollers, rollerbladers, bicyclists and joggers who all enjoy the view of Seattle's downtown skyline and the Olympic Mountains while getting their sportiness on. The park provides plenty of tables for setting up a picnic or simply set out a towel and gaze at the water. See if you can spot the small Statue of Liberty replica...
