Patit Creek Campsite

Patit Creek Campsite by VisitWa

Visit an amazing exhibit, featuring over 80 artistically-detailed steel silhouettes depicting a typical campsite of the Corps of Discovery as they passed through our area on May 2, 1806. After having reached the Pacific in November of 1805, the Corp of Discovery was on its way home. Two nights before, they camped near the confluence of the Walla Walla and Columbia Rivers. The chief of the Walla Wallas was a unique leader named Yellepit. He told the Explorers about a good over-land trail that would save them many miles of dangerous up-river travel by way of the treacherous Snake River. That over-land trail brought them down what is now Main Street in Dayton to this site along the Patit Creek. This wonderful addition to Columbia County History was developed not only to commemorate the Bicentennial but to be enjoyed by future generations of historians, students and tourists.

Steam Plant Square

Steam Plant Square by VisitWa

Historic Steam Plant The Central Steam Plant building, with its 225-foot-high, towering, twin stacks, is a prominent and readily identifiable Spokane landmark. Its most outstanding features - the characteristic smokestacks and high -arched windows - have graced the Spokane skyline for more than 80 years. The Central Steam Plant is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Washington Register of Historic Places and the Spokane Register of Historic Places. In fact, the great fire of 1889 started only 100 feet from where Steam Plant Square now sits. Washington Water Power operated the Central Steam Plant from 1919 to 1986, serving most of downtown Spokane with steam for heating and manufacturing purposes. http://www.steamplantsquare.com/press_1098.htm

Spokane Centennial Trail

Spokane Centennial Trail by VisitWa

The Spokane Centennial Trail is one of Spokane’s outdoor highlights! Any time of day during every day of the week you will find people enjoying the paved trail that stretches from the Idaho border to Nine Mile Falls. The Centenial Trail is a 81 mile non motorized path connecting Spokane to Coeur d'Alene. The Spokane River Centennial Trail is a paved path following mostly along the winding course of the Spokane River from the Washington–Idaho state line to Sontag Park in Nine Mile Falls, 37 miles west of Spokane. It puts walkers, joggers, runners, bicyclists, skateboarders, and roller-blade users on their own pathway of asphalt. There are endless places to get on or off the trail, and the trail runs mostly east - west, and generally is right next to the Spokane river. That lets the trail pass under most bridges, and with gradual elevation gain/loss (matching the river) for nearly all of it. The trail runs through the 100 acre Riverfront Park, so you easily access the trail from downtown Spokane.

Locomotive Park

Locomotive Park by visitwainfo

The 15 acre park was acquired by the City and the State in 1951. The Great Northern F-8 class 2-8-0 #1147 was built by Rogers Locomotive Works in 1902. It was donated to the City of Wenatchee in 1956. Designed for service on steep grades, this consolidation type locomotive was the first of a series by Rogers for The Great Northern. It is a G.N. class F-8 with a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement, and was one of the last steam engines on The Great Northern rails in the Pacific Northwest. No. 1147 did its first duty between Leavenworth and the Columbia Basin soon after delivery. It was assigned to Wenatchee between 1916 and 1948 and hauled the longest train for its class over the Wenatchee-Oroville branch. This display duplicates in every detail the standard Great Northern main line track of 115 pound steel, fully tie-plated, spiked and anchored on creosoted ties imbedded in 24 inch crushed rock ballast. No. 1147 and tender weigh nearly 129 tons. Engine and tender are 69 feet 8 1/2 inches long. Height from rail to t
