Wild Horse Sculptures

Wild Horse Sculptures by VisitWa

Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies is a series of 1 inch steel sculptures of 15 wild horses that crowns a prominent Central Washington hillside adjacent to the eastside of I-90 as you travel the freeway east about two miles from the Vantage Bridge. This 200-foot line of 15 life-size charging horses, the creation of David Govedare of Chewelah, Washington, captures a mystical spirit from a time when real wild horses roamed the steppes. Titled "Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies," the scene symbolically re-creates the Great Spirit turning loose a herd of wild horses above the Columbia River's Wanapum Lake.

Vashon North End Ferry Dock - PhotoOp

Vashon North End Ferry Dock - PhotoOp by VisitWa

One of the best things about visiting Vashon is the trip over on the Ferry. Being an island with no bridges connecting to Vashon, the Ferries are a the lifeblood of the Island, and they are also a very pretty ride. When on the ferry approaching the ferry landing at the north end of Vashon, you can often capture a memorable photo at sunset. Great place to take a picture.

Bike in the Tree - Unique Photo Op by VisitWa

How did that bicycle get in that tree? Vashon's original bicycle stuck in a tree. There are many stories about this who did this and why. We don't want to spoil your fun in finding out but the truth is out there. It’s a good conversation starter with the local citizenry. Best place to take an original "selfie" on Vashon.

The Palus Artifact Museum

The Palus Artifact Museum by VisitWa

This kid-friendly, visually-stimulating and hands-on museum offers a glimpse of the region's past through a collection of locally-found Indian artifacts. The Palouse Indians wintered about 25 miles northwest of Dayton, not far from Palouse Falls near the confluence of the Palouse and Snake Rivers. A nomadic people, the Palouse made seasonal rounds hunting and gathering food along the area's rivers and in the nearby Blue Mountains. They also met with other native peoples from around the region for celebrations that included trading, feasting, sport and gambling. A popular gathering place was along the Touchet River at what is now Dayton. The dirt trail where horse races were once held later became the town's Main Street. There is also a Lewis & Clark display. Hours: Fridays and Saturdays from 1 - 4pm or by appointment. Call 509-382-4820. Free admission but donations welcomed.
