St. Anthony’s Church (Santo Antonio de Lisboa)

St. Anthony’s Church (Santo Antonio de Lisboa) by dshay

Matchmaker and protector of brides, St. Anthony was born in Lisbon. As such St. Anthony’s Church is a favorite stop among Catholics and non-Catholics alike. The church was built in 1757 and, as church’s go, it isn’t particularly unique or grand. Its significance lies with its namesake, St. Anthony. If you happen to be fortunate enough to be in Lisbon in mid-June you might be lucky enough to be at St. Anthony’s during the Feast of St. Anthony when mass weddings are held. St. Anthony’s is in the Alfama area and can be reached via Tram 28.

Discoveries Monument (Padrao dos Descobrimentos) - Photo Op

Discoveries Monument (Padrao dos Descobrimentos) - Photo Op by dshay

Photo op. Discoverers Monument is a very dramatic stone monument built in 1960 as a memorial to the great Portuguese explorers of the Age of Discovery. All of the most notable Portuguese explorers are featured, the most prominent being Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Henry the Navigator (Henry is the figure on the prow of the vessel). Interestingly, there is one woman included in the group of explorers, Queen Felipa of Lancaster, Henry the Navigator’s mother, who is generally credited with being the driving force behind Portugal’s bold exploration effort. The monument is in Belem across the highway from Jeronimos Monastery and can be reached via a tunnel that leads from the park in front of Jeronimos.

Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara - Photo Op

Miradouro Sao Pedro de Alcantara - Photo Op by dshay

Photo op. This is probably the most popular viewpoint in Lisbon. Located at the top of the Elevador da Gloria, this viewpoint is easily accessible and provides an excellent view over the heart of Lisbon and a magnificent view of St. George’s Castle. The majestic panorama of the city’s landmarks and attractions serves as a supporting cast to the 6th Century Castelo de Sao Jorge and the Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora of the Renaissance period. From this viewpoint, the Graca Hills and the myriad of religious and commercial landmarks are visible. Adding a nice compliment to the view is a garden and a garden fountain offering the city’s baroque charm. This is a great place to just sit and relax or enjoy a picnic lunch.

Igreja de Sao Roque (Church of Saint Roch)

Igreja de Sao Roque (Church of Saint Roch) by dshay

This church was built in the 16th century by the Jesuits and it is one of the first Jesuit churches in Lisbon. Open 10 AM (1000) to 5 PM (1700) Tue-Sun. Closed Monday's. It’s significance as a tourism destination is centered around one of the chapels in the church, the Chapel of St. John the Baptist. The chapel was constructed in the 18th century in Rome and then disassembled and shipped to Lisbon. It is made of several types of precious stones and, at the time of construction, represented one of the most expensive chapels ever built anywhere in the world. It’s current value is incalculable. The Igreja de Sao Roque is located on Largo Trindade Coelho very near the top of the Elevator da Gloria.

Miradouro (Viewpoint) do Senhora do Monte

Miradouro (Viewpoint) do Senhora do Monte by dshay

Photo Op. The highest view point in Lisbon. The Miradouro do Senhora do Monte (Our Lady of the Hill) is located above the Castelo St. Jorge. This viewpoint provides the best view of the city of any of the many viewpoints in Lisbon. The setting is a favorite with young locals, especially in late afternoon. During the summer, the viewpoint remains open well into the night. You’ll find a small image of the Virgin standing in front of a chapel dedicated to Saint Gens and overlooking the city. It can be reached by turning left on Largo da Graca from Miradouro da Graca into Rua Damasceno Monteiro, then bearing right up Calcada do Monte. You can take Tram 28 to reach Largo da Graca.

Avila Adobe - oldest building in LA

Avila Adobe - oldest building in LA by YodioMan

The Avila Adobe was built in 1818 by Francisco Avila and has the distinction of being the oldest standing residence in Los Angeles, California. The Avila Adobe is open for public touring and is located at East 10 Olvera Street within El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park. The park office is located at 845 N. Alameda Street, and the Visitors Information Center is at 128 Paseo de la Plaza. The present adobe is a historic house museum, with seven rooms left from what used to be a much larger building. Restoration has worked to create an idea of what the original home was like. The largest room, the family room, was a general area for dining, entertainment, and social gatherings. The office room was the main business room for Francisco Avila. The sala, or living room, was reserved for special occasions such as a wedding or baptism or maybe even entertaining special guests. The adobe is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and a California Historical Landmark (No. 145) and is on the National Registe

Ursa Beach - one of Europe's most beautiful beaches (Photo Op) by dshay

Photo Op. Beach. Ursa is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe. It is a small beach surrounded by spectacular rock formations. Getting to the beach requires a bit of a hike. It is only accessible via a steep trail that starts at a marked parking area near Cabo da Roca. Take the trail that starts on the left side of the parking area as you face the sea. With sturdy shoes, plenty of water and your camera you’ll be amply rewarded. Note, this is a clothing optional beach.

Historic Union Station - PhotoOp and Chihuly glass

Historic Union Station - PhotoOp and Chihuly glass by VisitWa

Ph. 253-863-5173 The historic Union Station is a fascinating building in its own right. The building was completed in 1911 and was a major train station for the Northern Pacific Railroad until the 1980s. The building is an art experience with its magnificent marble walls, terazzo floors, and the original glass block flooring in the east balcony area. Today, the City of Tacoma owns the building and it serves as the entrance to the federal courthouse. It is accessible to the public, but you will have to go through a security check. Once inside, you can view several impressive exhibitions of Chihuly glass, including a large chandelier hanging from the ceiling, colorful pieces of glass along the upstairs windows, and a full wall of the artist's paintings also upstairs. The Tacoma Union Station is open to the public Monday-Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. More info at web site: www.unionstationrotunda.org

Chinook Red Chandelier (1999) by Dale Chihuly

Chinook Red Chandelier (1999) by Dale Chihuly by VisitWa

The UWT's library features a Dale Chihuly (born, raised in Tacoma) glass art piece in a 2nd story wing of the campus library building. The University of Washington-Tacoma library has this single piece on display, but it is impressive: a 23-foot-tall chandelier hanging from the ceiling of its lobby. Named the Chinook Red Chandelier, the glass in this installation is 7 feet wide and 19 feet long, the fiery Chinook Red is composed of more than 900 individual pieces of glass and weighs 1,500 pounds. The UW Tacoma Library is the heart of the current campus and includes the beautifully restored Snoqualmie Falls Power Company Transformer House (1902). Now used as the reading room of the library, this elegant neoclassical building once was home to giant transformers that supplied power to much of the city. The building served as a power station until 1958. The library is a half block up the hill from the Light Rail stop on Pacific Ave.

The Swiss Historic Building

The Swiss Historic Building by SeattleFood

Ph. 253-572-3160 A restaurant and tavern called The Swiss, located behind the U.W. campus, welcomes all to admire its historic building. Dating from 1913, the building was originally a social hall for Swiss immigrants. You are welcome to step inside and admire the original exposed-brick walls that create a cool atmosphere in this dimly lit place. Across the top of the bar, you can enjoy the eight pieces of Chihuly glasswork. The Swiss usually has wall art on display from a selected local artist. Every month they invite a local artist to present their art on the walls. Art shows, music, and events are on the Swiss schedule: http://www.theswisspub.com/calendar.html
