Igreja Sao Domingos (Sao Domingos Church)

Igreja Sao Domingos (Sao Domingos Church) by dshay

Sao Domingos Church lies just to the east of Rossio Square, Lisbon’s main downtown square. There are plenty of churches to see in Lisbon and compared architecturally with many others Sao Domingos isn’t anything special. What makes the church unique is its link to probably the most sordid period in Portugal’s history, the Inquisition. The Inquisition in Portugal lasted for about 300 years and during that period it is estimated that more than 40,0000 Conversos were put to death. ( Conversos were those who had theoretically converted from Judaism to Catholicism. The Inquisition targeted Conversos that were suspected of actually retaining their old religious practices). It is on the steps of the church of Sao Domingos that the sentences for those to be executed were handed down.

Largo de Sao Domoingos (Sao Domingos Square)-Photo Op

Largo de Sao Domoingos (Sao Domingos Square)-Photo Op by dshay

Very near Rossio Square, the central square of downtown Lisbon, lies Sao Domingos Square -- the location of one of the most important memorials in Lisbon. Modern day Lisbon prides itself on being a city of tolerance. That was certainly not always the case. On this location in 1506, some 30 years before the inquisition was formally commenced, more than 2,000 Jews were burned alive. A memorial has now been erected to acknowledge that terrible time in Portuguese history and to make it clear that such intolerance is no longer part of Portugal’s makeup. The memorial is moving and worth a visit. It is often overlooked by tourists because it is a bit off most main walking routes but it is worth the minor detour.

Miradouro (Viewpoint) de Santa Luzia (Photo Op) by dshay

This viewpoint is a photo opportunity. It provides a terrific view of the river Tagus over the houses of the Alfama and it is the general starting point for a walk through the Alfama. The viewpoint lies next to the Church of Santa Luzia. Be sure to look on the outside walls of the church for the two historical murals that are worth viewing.

Alfama -- (Photo Op)

Alfama -- (Photo Op) by dshay

The Alfama is one of the most picturesque and historically interesting areas of Lisbon. No trip to Lisbon would be complete without a stroll through the Alfama. The word, Alfama, is a derivative of an Arabic word meaning hot springs and is reflective of the enduring Moorish influence in Lisbon. Take Tram 28 up to the stop for St. George’s Castle. Enjoy the view of the city from the viewpoint (miradouro) and then walk down the steps next to the viewpoint and start wondering the medieval alleys. At night the area comes alive with numerous restaurants and fado houses.

Torre de Belem (Belem Tower) -- (Photo Op)

Torre de Belem (Belem Tower) -- (Photo Op) by dshay

The Tower of Belem was built in 1515 as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon harbor. It is from this location that many of Portugal’s expeditionary voyages were launched during the Age of Discovery. It has become one of the most iconic monuments in Portugal. If you are into architecture the Tower of Belem is an excellent example of all of the details of the Manueline style. You can walk to the top of the tower and admission is free. The Tower can be accessed by walking along the river from the Discover’s Monument or by taking Tram 15.

Vasco da Gama Bridge - Longest Bridge in Europe (Photo Op)

Vasco da Gama Bridge - Longest Bridge in Europe (Photo Op) by dshay

Vasco da Gama Bridge can be easily viewed from the Park of the Nations. At 17km(11 miles) it is the longest bridge in Europe. The design is stunning and makes for a stunning view from the Park of Nations. The bridge is so long that engineers needed to factor in the curvature of the earth which presented a very unique design challenge.

Parque dos Nacoes (Park of Nations) Photo Op

Parque dos Nacoes (Park of Nations) Photo Op by dshay

Photo op. Originally built in 1998 for Portugal’s World Expo, Park of Nations is a wonderful riverfront park. It is now part of one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in Europe. The modernistic architecture stands in complete contrast to the old world feel of most of the other parts of Lisbon. The Park is home to Lisbon’s Oceanarium (see separate entry), the enticing Vasco da Gama shopping center, an ariel cable car that runs along the river and numerous restaurants, hotels and the Casino of Lisbon, there is plenty to attract visitors of any age. With great areas for walking, riding bikes or just sitting by the river, it is also a great place to enjoy a relaxing day. To reach the Park take the Metro red line to Oriente Station.

Avenida da Liberdade (Photo Op)

Avenida da Liberdade (Photo Op) by dshay

As you would expect, the grandest boulevard in Lisbon offers many great photo ops. It is lined with fine shops, hotels, restaurants and mansions. It is a very reasonable 1.6 km (1 mile) long stroll stretching from the downtown area to Marques do Pombal park. Your stroll along the Avenida will be packed with experiences of grandeur so often associated with Lisbon.
