Docas de Santa Amaro (Docks of Santa Amaro) by dshay

Docas de Santo Amaro is a marina located almost directly under the 25 de Abril bridge. There is a long line of warehouses that have been converted to restaurants making this a great option for exploring a wide variety of eating choices in a beautiful, seaside setting. The very modern marina is home to a number of pleasure craft. This area is a wonderful area to take a leisurely stroll or just sit and relax by the water.

Basilica da Estrela (Photo Op)

Basilica da Estrela (Photo Op) by dshay

Basilica da Estrela stands as one of Lisbon’s most distinguished landmarks. It was built in the late 1800’s by Queen Maria I to fulfill a vow that she made in giving birth to a son. It has a huge dome with twin bell towers decorated with saints and other figures. Inside you will find a spectacular Christmas manger complete with over 500 figures. It is possible to go to the top of the dome for a terrific view of the city. Trams 25 and 28 both start/finish next to the basilica. Directly across the street from the basilica is the wonderful Jardim da Estrela (see separate entry). Open daily from 8 AM (0800) to 1 PM (1300) and 3 PM (1500) to 8 PM (2000).

Costa da Caparica (Photo Op)

Costa da Caparica (Photo Op) by dshay

Costa da Caparica is both a town and an exceptionally long stretch of sandy beach. In fact, at 30 km Costa da Caparica is the longest stretch of uninterrupted sandy beach in Europe. Costa da Caparica lies just southwest of Lisbon. You can take a ferry from Cais de Sodre and then hop a bus to get to the beach area or you can take a bus directly from Praca da Espanha in Lisbon. The northern part of the beach is home to several water sports centers and it is the most crowded Costa da Caparica beach area in the summer. From the northern end of the beach there is a narrow gauge, open air train that runs south for several miles and stops at every beach access point. Bar/cafe facilities are available at every beach stop and all bars/cafes have lounge chairs and umbrellas available for rental. Praia Sereia and Praia Moreno are two of the best options because of their excellent facilities and relatively modest crowds.

Jardim (Garden) do Principe Real

Jardim (Garden) do Principe Real by dshay

This small but elegant garden in the heart of Lisbon offers a quiet refuge in an otherwise hectic environment. There is a large umbrella shaped tree in the center of the garden and on Saturday’s vendors set up fruit and vegetable stands under the tree. The garden is only a short walk from the top of Elevador da Gloria.

Igreja da Graca (Grace Church) (Photo Op) by dshay

The Igreja da Graca, originally constructed in the 1200’s, is one of the oldest churches in Lisbon. It was heavily damaged in the earthquake of 1755 and was reconstructed during the 1800’s. Although not much remains of the original church it is still a historically significant, and quite beautiful, church. The Miradouro’s (viewpoints) nearby offer excellent views of the city. The Igreja is located on Largo da Graca in the Alfama district and can be accessed via Tram 28.

Campo Pequeno (Photo Op)

Campo Pequeno (Photo Op) by dshay

Campo Pequeno was constructed in 1892 for the purpose of being Lisbon’s central bullring. Bullfighting is still a popular sport in Portugal (note: unlike Spain, the bulls are not killed in the ring in Portugal) but Campo Pequeno is now rarely used for that purpose. It was completely renovated in 2006, complete with retractable rough, and now is primarily used for concerts and other events. It seats 9,000. The perimeter is lined with shops and restaurants. It is worth visiting both for its place in Lisbon’s bullfighting history and because of its beautiful, Moorish inspired, architecture.

Huntington Park

Huntington Park by VisitWa

Huntington Park provides an experience of the power and beauty of the lower Spokane Falls on the Spokane River. The park is open all year, but the water flow changes with the season. To experience the roaring of the river, March-May is best. In the winter, the flow is drastically lower, but the rocks are exposed and fantastic ice formations appear making for some great photographs. There are dozens of interpretive signs and many public art installations highlighting Native American culture and hydroelectric history. The park is named after David L. Huntington, Washington Water Power's 3rd president. Wheelchair access provides an overlook of the park and partial views of the river below. There is limited metered parking on Post St. near the entrance and a Public Pay lot across the street. Open 5:00 am – 11:00 pm (509) 625-6200 Spokane Parks and Recreation AvistaLegacy.com

You will enjoy walking through stunning examples of a number of architectural styles. A pamphlet describing the tour is available in the lobby at the concierge desk. Statue of Tacoma's First and Best Promoter

Statue of Tacoma's First and Best Promoter by VisitWa

The Illinois school teacher and chicken farmer come to Tacoma in 1883 with $ 2.40 in his pocket. He soon became a champion for Tacoma. Reportedly in a matter of months he was on the path to becoming Tacoma’s first millionaire. Mason bought cheap woodland on the north edge of town and divided it into house lots. He borrowed money to construct bridges and build streetcar lines, then gave Tacoma some unbuildable land for what is now called Puget Park. More than a local developer, Mason viewed the U.S. as his “big market”. If they had a reason, they would come to Tacoma….and buy his lots and houses. Mason drafted over 100 slogans that praised the city. He organized his slogans as radiant rays in the shape of a star. He called it Tacoma's "Star of Destiny" and printed full-page newspaper ads in far-flung cities like Cincinnati and New York. Mason's Star of Destiny is reproduced on the sidewalk in front of his statue. Behind the star stands the bronze Mason - Tacoma’s first and possibly best Super Salesman.

Bob's Java Jive Teapot -- a landmark dive PhotoOp

Bob's Java Jive Teapot -- a landmark dive PhotoOp by VisitWa

Often called a teapot, it was actually built as a Giant Coffee Pot. Built in 1927 as the Coffee Pot Restaurant by a Tacoma veterinarian, Otis G. Button, this landmark was designed by local artist/promoter Bert Smyser, owner of a commercial display business. The concrete coffee pot stands 25 ft. high and is 30 ft. in diameter. Full of nostalgia and kitsch. You won’t be at a loss for visual stimulation, because there is a clutter of memorabilia, photos and stuff tacked onto every wall and ceiling. Hours: Can view any time. Opens in the evenings. Phone: 253-475-9843
