Monsanto Park is the largest urban forest in Europe. Located just a short distance from the heart of Lisbon, Monsanto is a great place for a bike ride, hike, picnic or just taking some time to relax. There are restaurants and other facilities in the park but in general it is maintained in its natural state. There is also an interpretive center.

Se Cathedral – (Photo Op) by dshay

In nearly every Portuguese city the most prominent Catholic church in the city is labeled “Se”. The Se Cathedral in Lisbon is the oldest church in Lisbon (construction started in 1147) and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Lisbon. The church has been modified a number of times and major portions were reconstructed following the earthquake of 1755. Because the number of modifications that took place over so many years the architecture of the church reflects a number of different styles and time periods. While the church is quite beautiful the most compelling reason for visiting the church is its significance in Portuguese history. The church is open from 7 AM (0700) to 5 PM (1700_daily.

Praca dos Restauradores (Restorers Square) by dshay

Praca dos Restauradores is located at the southern end of Avenida Liberdad. If you are driving Praca dos Restauradores is a good destination to keep in mind because there is a large underground parking garage at the Praca. Praca dos Restauradores is named for the restorers of Lisbon following the earthquake of 1755. The Praca is worth a visit because is a center of activity in Lisbon and because some of the surrounding buildings are quite interesting architecturally. There are dozens of restaurants in the area and Rossio Station is located on one side of the Praca. Praca dos Restauradores connects with Rossio Square (see separate entry).

Graceland West - Owned by Elvis Presley 1970-1983 by YodioMan

Elvis purchased this house in 1970 from Ray Kroc, driving force of fast food empire - McDonald’s. Elvis recorded 9 songs while in the house. He and his wife, Priscilla, spent several months a year (and their daughter, Lisa Marie) until their divorce in 1973. Originally purchased for $ 105,000. Elvis added 2,000 square feet to the house to include his entertainment suite – he called “The Jungle Room”. Four years after Elvis’s death, the home was purchased by Frankie Valli. He owned the house for approximately 4 years before selling the property.

Largo do Chafariz de Dentro – (Photo Op) by dshay

The Largo do Chafariz de Dentro is a typical square in the heart of the Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest districts. If you want to sit in a cafe and experience the pace of daily life this is a good place to do it. The Fado Museum is also nearby as are a number of Fado houses. Sometimes locals will break out in song so you might get lucky and hear some spontaneous Fado! The square is in the lower part of the Alfama so you don’t have to walk uphill to get here. Just start at Praca Comercio and head east on the street that runs closest to the river and you’ll find the square in about 20 minutes.

Cacilhas and Cais do Ginjal (Photo Op) by dshay

A very enjoyable way to spend the day is to see Lisbon from the other side of the river. To get to Cacilhas and Cais do Ginjal take the ferry from Cais do Sodre. You’ll be rewarded with fine views of Lisbon and a great area to stroll and relax over a fine lunch. Some of the best restaurants in Lisbon are in this area. Cacilhas sits at the base of a bluff. On top of the bluff lies the old town of Almada. To extend your visit consider taking the elevator to the top of the bluff and tour Almada’s Old Town.

Ribeira das Naus – (Photo Op) by dshay

Ribeira das Naus is a beautiful promenade that runs along the river between Cais do Sodre and Praca Comercio. The Ribeira was completely re-done in 2013 and it has now become Lisbon’s “beach”. While swimming is not allowed it is the closest place to the heart of Lisbon to sit in the sun and relax by the water.

Mercado de Santa Clara (Santa Clara Market) – (Photo Op) by dshay

There are dozens of markets in Lisbon and all are worth visiting but the Santa Clara market is one of the oldest and most eclectic. This market has been in operation since 1877 and is located high in the Alfama at Campo da Santa Clara. The market is open on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s from early morning until mid-afternoon.

Estacao do Rossio (Rossio Railway Station) – (Photo Op) by dshay

Designed in the late 19th century, Rossio Station is considered to be one of the most important engineering feats in Portugal, given the fact that trains enter and exit the station via a tunnel that was dug under the city almost 150 years ago. The station’s Neo-Manueline architecture makes it look more like a theater than a train station. Trains from this station go to the town of Sintra.

Mercado da Ribeira - (Photo Op) by dshay

Literally every town of any size in Portugal has a Mercado where local farmers and merchants sell fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, etc. Even if you are staying in a hotel and don’t have need for groceries, wondering through a Mercado is a feast for the senses that is not to be missed. The largest Mercado in Lisbon is the Mercado da Ribeira which is open daily, except Sunday, from 5 AM (0500) to 2 PM (1400). The Mercado is located in a beautiful 19th century building located directly across the highway from Cais do Sodre train station. In addition to all of the fruit and vegetable stands there are a great many restaurants. If you want to eat like a local and eat with the locals this is the place to go.

Ponte 25 de Abril (25th of April Bridge) – (Photo Op) by dshay

The 25th of April Bridge was constructed in 1966 and originally named after the dictator Salazar that ruled the country at the time of construction. The name was later changed to 25 de Abril to commemorate the Carnation Revolution, the revolution that toppled the regime of Salazar’s successor. The bridge was patterned after and looks much like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Franciso in the USA. However, the central span is longer than that of the Golden Gate and it is the longest in Europe. There are many good vantage points to see the bridge but one of the best is the Docas de Santa Amaro (see separate entry).

Arco Triumphal da Rua Augusta (Rua Augusta Arch) – (Photo Op) by dshay

The Rua Augusta Arch stands at southern end of Rua Augusta, Lisbon’s main pedestrian street, at the entrance to Praca do Comercio. It is one of the most famous symbols of Lisbon. It was originally designed in 1775 to provide a gateway to the city. The arch that exists today was actually constructed in 1875 and totally refurbished in 2013. An elevator was installed as part of the 2013 refurbishment so now it is possible to go to the top of the arch to have a great view of the city and the River Tagus.

Igreja (Church) da Sao Vincente de Fora – (Photo Op) by dshay

The Church of St. Vincent began construction in 1147, just after the Portuguese drove the Moor’s from Lisbon. The church was not totally completed until 1629 and construction of the attached convent was not completed until the 18th century. St. Vincent is the patron saint of Lisbon and his remains are buried here along with the remains of many of Portugal’s kings and queens. Having been constructed over such a long period of time the church exhibits a wide range of architectural styles. The interior features a magnificent Baroque alter piece. The church is in the Alfama district and can be accessed via Tram 28.

Cristo Rei Statue (Statue of Christ the King) – (Photo Op) by dshay

Looking south from most anywhere in Lisbon, the Cristo Rei Statue dominates the skyline. Patterned after the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, the statue is 28 meters high and sites on top of an 82 meter pedestal and sits on top of a knoll on the south shore of the Tagus River next to the 25 de Abril bridge. It is one of the most iconic landmarks in Lisbon. You can go up to the top of the pedestal for a stunning view of the city. There may be a small fee, depending on when you go. To get to the statue from Lisbon take the ferry from Cais do Sodre to Cacilhas and then hop on a bus for the short ride to the statue.

Jardim (Garden) da Praca do Imperio - (Photo Op) by dshay

The Jardim da Praca do Imperio sits directly in front of Monasterio Jeronimos. The park was constructed in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition commemorating the 800th anniversary of Portuguese independence. The park offers a wonderful respite from all of the tourist sites nearby. On many weekends there are large, open air markets in the park.

King Jose I Statue - (Photo Op) by dshay

The statue of King Jose I sits in the middle of Praca do Comercio (see separate entry). King Jose I was king from 1750-1777 making him the king that was in power when the Great Earthquake hit Lisbon in 1755. He is probably most famous for appointing his prime minister, Marques do Pombal, to be in charge of the restoration of the city following the earthquake. The Marques was reputed to be extremely creative (he basically redesigned the downtown area) but also power hungry and ruthless. It is said that he extended his reach well beyond that of restorer of the city into all aspects of the economy and politics (see separate entry under Praca Marques do Pombal).

Praca Marques do Pombal (Marques do Pombal Square)-(Photo Op) by dshay

Following the great earthquake of 1755 the Margues do Pombal was appointed Prime Minister and given the task of rebuilding the city. He decided to rebuild the downtown area in a style similar to other great European cities featuring an expansive central boulevard ending at a large roundabout with a park in the center, much like the Champs-Elysees in Paris. The park, commonly known as Praca Marques do Pombal, sits in the middle of the roundabout at the northern end of Avenida Liberdad. The parque features a large column with a statue of Marques do Pombal on top. The Marques is depicted holding a lion as a symbol of power and the base of the column consists of various carved stones configured in the shape of a tidal wave and destroyed buildings as a commemorative to the Great Earthquake. The column and statue are one of the most recognized symbols of Lisbon and makes for a great photo opportunity. The parque is next to Parque Eduard VII (see separate entry).

Tolerance Memorial (Inquisition Memorial) - (Photo Op) by dshay

By their nature, the Portuguese people are very tolerant, peaceful and welcoming people. But, at various times Portugal has experienced its share of horrors. One of the most horrific days in Portuguese history was 19 April 1506 when religious fervor, spirited on by the local bishop, led to the massacre of thousands of Jews. A bon fire was built in front of Sao Domingos church and Jews were rounded up in mass and tossed, alive, into the fire. It certainly represents one of the bleakest days in Portuguese history. Several years ago the city constructed a monument to tolerance as a symbol of their rejection of this dark day in Portuguese history and as a general reminder of Portugal’s overall attitude of tolerance. Expressions of tolerance are depicted in dozens of languages along a memorial wall that goes around much of Sao Domingos Square. Sao Domingos Square is just a five minute walk from Rossio Square.

Rossio Square (Photo Op) by dshay

Rossio Square, located in the heart of Lisbon, has been the central meeting place for Lisbon residents for hundreds of years. It has been the center for revolutions, protests, bullfights, executions and all manner of political activity. Today it is still the liveliest square in Lisbon. On either end of the square there are baroque fountains and in the middle of the square there is a monument depicting justice, strength, wisdom and moderation. These were all thought to be traits of Dom Pedro IV who appears on top of the monument. There are many sites worth seeing worth seeing near Rossio Square but one thing not to miss is Cafe Nicola on the west side of the square. The art deco Cafe Nicola is one of the most famous cafes in Lisbon.
