Leif Erikson -- Scandanavian hero
attractions,Ballard,
Leif Erikson, the first recorded European to set foot on American shores, stands tall in this statue of Leif Erikson guarding Shilshole Marina in Seattle's Scandinavian neighborhood of Ballard.
Scandinavians (Danes, Finns, Icelanders, Norwegians, and Swedes) settled in Ballard during the late 1800 and the twentieth century to become the largest —immigrant groups in Ballard.
This Leif Erikson statue was gifted to Seattle by the Norwegian American community and was originally unveiled during the Seattle World’s Fair in June 1962.
The 17 foot tall statue includes a base of large granite stone approximately six feet high, in the middle of a plaza. The statue is encircled with upright, runic-like stones, featuring authentic Viking carvings.
